With the development of neurological science in the 20th century, Phrenology fell into disrepute, as some of its assumptions about the localisation of brain function and the skull were found to be mistaken. Left and right brain functions, for example were unknown to early Phrenologists. Nevertheless, recent discoveries on the location of brain functions have given more credence to Phrenology's claims.

Phrenology and its sister discipline Physiognomy - the reading of character from signs on the face - have had a profound influence on how we judge other people, and what we mean by beauty, leadership and attractiveness. Whether we like it or not, we are influenced by external signs in others and ourselves. Phrenology's maxim is "Know Thyself".
